“Lost and found department, this is Colleen.“
“Hi Colleen, this is John. I briefly spoke with a girl down by the beach and now I can’t find her. I even looked for her in the snack bar. Can you please help me find her?”
“Are you crazy? This is the lost and found department where people turn in handbags, wallets, beach toys, towels, and all kinds of junk. And you’re asking me if I can help you find some chick you spoke to on the beach?
“Crazy huh? How long have you worked here at the Lake Colleen?
“ First off John, I don’t even know who the heck you are, I don’t even know where you are calling me from, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s none of your business how long I’ve worked here. But if you keep bugging me, I will call security“
“I am up at the clubhouse by the restaurant. You can call security on me if you want. I’m wearing brown and yellow plaid swim trunks. I have a shirt with tropical birds on it. I think there’s some surfers dudes on it too, and yes, I know they don’t match, and I probably look like I just stepped out of the 60s beach boy era.
“It’s no surprise to me why you can’t find the girl you’re looking for. I suspect she took one look at you and how you were dressed, and instantly thought you were a dork.
“I can see why you might think that, although I think it’s kind of mean of you to say that to me Colleen. But the girl I’m looking for has beautiful golden hair. We spoke briefly. I don't know her name. She was kind and polite and definitely very pretty. When I turned away from her for a brief minute and looked back, she was gone.
The lost and found department at the lake where Colleen worked, had a mirror on the wall to the side of the counter. While Colleen sorted the miscellaneous lost and found items. She picked up a kid’s sand bucket with a shovel, and other sand tools, and then she glanced over to the mirror and saw her reflection. “Wait a minute, I have what some people would call golden hair. Oh no, I think I talked to that dork John, when I was coming back from lunch. I think this isn’t going to go well.“
Colleen was indeed pretty and she had golden hair.
It was a common occurrence for men at the lake wanting to start a conversation with her, and maybe even date her.
“Wait a minute, I did talk to that guy. He was polite and he was definitely good looking, but then again there’s lots of good looking guys that come to the lake. He was just another guy trying to be friendly.“ Colleen continued to piece together what happened when she spoke with this guy named John.
“I remember now, I was in a hurry to get back to my job. I knew people would be lining up in front of lost and found. My lunch relief could be very rude, and often pissed off a lot of people. I would have to be the schmoozer and do my best to keep everybody happy.“
While that conversation was going on in Colleen’s head. She heard John say on the phone, “Our you still there Colleen? Did you call security on me?
“No John, I did not call security on you. I think I know who the girl with the golden hair is, and I might know where you can find her. I don’t have time to be dealing with this today, but I'll tell you what, I’m going to give you my phone number. Today is Saturday. I don’t work on Sunday. Call me in the afternoon and I will tell you where you can find the girl with the golden hair if you are still interested.“
“You are an angel Colleen, I will do as you suggest. I know deep down inside there’s something really special about this girl, and I need to find her and speak with her. I’m not a creep. I have a very good reputation and I have a very good job. I just want to be able to chat with her and see if my intuition and feelings are correct. I hope she and I can become great friends Colleen. Oh and one more thing, you said you think you know who she is, could you tell me her name?”
“Just wait until Sunday John, I will have much better information for you when you call. Goodbye for now.“
It was Sunday afternoon, and John did as instructed. He called Colleen and she answered on the second ring.
“Hi John.”
“Hi Colleen.” He told her how much he appreciated her willingness to help him find the girl with the golden hair.
“John, I have an idea that I hope you’re in agreement with? If you don’t mind, let’s meet at the Lakeside Coffee Shop. Can you be there by three?“
“Absolutely Colleen, I will be there and I’m looking forward to meeting you. Looks like it might be raining when we meet.”
“John, you have to promise me one thing. Don’t you dare wear that hideous shirt you told me about. I hate Hawaiian shirts. I think they’re tacky. Especially nowadays.“
“OK, Colleen I promise. So you will recognize me, I will be wearing a Van Halen T-shirt, I hope that’s OK with you?“
“That’s cool John, you have good taste in music. I’ll look for you at 3 PM. Rain or shine. I will be sitting in the corner by the window where you can see the lake. Looking forward to meeting you in person.“
“ You’re very kind Colleen. I’m looking forward to meeting you also. Although I think you’re being pretty secretive when it comes to introducing me to the girl with the golden hair. I’m not sure why you could not have just told me over the phone, but I really am anxious to meet you in person.”
3 PM at the Lakeside Coffee Shop. John walks in, looks around and sees a girl sitting by the window that Colleen described on the phone. She was backlit so he could not really make out what she looked like. As he walked over to Colleen. He could see that the rain stopped, and the sun was shining through the rain soaked window. The beaming sun through the window was brightly striking Colleen’s lustrously golden hair.
“Are you Colleen?”
“Are you John?” Yes and yes, they responded to each other. John sat down in a chair directly across from Colleen who was somewhat snuggled up in the corner. She then leaned forward. John could now see Colleen clearly.
“I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with me, Colleen.” John was staring at her intently. His thoughts became focused and unfocused almost simultaneously, but he finally came to the idea that this might be the girl with golden hair sitting in front of him.
“Why are you staring at me John? Don’t be creepy,” she said in a kidding tone. Of course she knew what he was thinking.
“You are the girl with the golden hair, aren’t you? Or better yet you are the devilish girl with the golden hair.“
“Yes John, I guess you could say my hair is a golden color, although no one has ever referred to my hair as being golden. I have to admit I found it very flattering when you referred to me as The Girl With The Golden Hair. I am the one you ran into at the lake. I didn’t pay much attention to you. I had to get back to the lost and found job. It took me a while to figure out that you and I did meet and that I was the one you were looking for. I didn’t mean to be so mean to you. I did think you were kinda stupid for trying to find a girl through the lake’s lost and found.
But I guess it worked because you found me and I can’t argue with that.”
“Colleen, I liked everything about you when I first laid eyes on you. And even though our conversation was short, very short. I just felt an energy from you that I wanted to get to know more about. I really did not know what to do, Colleen. Maybe I was being divinely guided, because here I am comfortably sitting with you. And like you like to say, can’t argue with that.”
“John, are you teasing me? Even if you are, I like it and I like you.”
“Colleen, even though we don’t know each other very well right this minute. I know we were meant to be together.“ Let’s go out on a date, if you’re open to it?”
“I would like that very much John, I mean, going out on a date with you, and to get to know each other better. Maybe we can go out to dinner at a mutually agreed-upon place. I’m parked right out front, so how about walking me to my car? Give me a call during the week. and we can work out a time and place.“
“Sounds perfect to me, Colleen.“ They both stood up and walked out the door to Colleen’s car. Colleen reached out her hand to shake John’s hand. There they shook hands.
“Colleen, I have something I want to say to you right now before we part. I want to kiss you.”
“ John… really?! Why would I let you kiss me right here and now? We haven’t even gone on an official date yet.”
“Colleen, I can explain. I know it may seem extremely forward and out of place, but let me tell you my thoughts. A while back ago, I saw a Woody Allen movie. I’m pretty sure it was Annie Hall. The character Woody Allen, told Annie that, “We should just kiss right now. That way we can avoid all the uncomfortableness of trying to decide the best time. I will just kiss you right now here on the street.”
“So for me like in the Annie Hall movie, when would the timing be right for me to kiss you Colleen? It would be awkward for both of us, so if you just let me kiss you right now then everything would be OK, less anxiousness. Besides, I’m already nervous because I really want us to ultimately become boyfriend and girlfriend.”
“Well, I can’t decide in my own mind just how crazy you are John. But I can appreciate your point. I definitely want to get to know you better. But here’s my thought. It’s something I read that this person, Faraaz Kazi said. It’s the best response I can think of for you wanting to kiss me right now. Ready for it John? Here you go. “The best kiss is the one that’s been exchanged 1000 times by the eyes before it ever reached the lips.”
“That’s pretty powerful, Colleen, doesn’t exactly go along with my intentions, but it’s hard to argue with that statement. So I have to stare at you 1000 times with my eyes before I can kiss you? I’m pretty sure that when I saw you at the lake, I already… as feeble it might’ve been. Kissed you with my eyes a whole ton. Now that I met you in the restaurant and standing before you now, I’m pretty sure I kissed you a bunch more in my imagination. But I respect your wishes, of course, and we’ll see what happens on our first official date.”
“Thank you John. I’m worth it! I know that probably sounds arrogant, but by the mere fact you’re standing with me right now is proof. Proof that I'm hoping you will pick up on my desire to get to know you better. Maybe we will become boyfriend girlfriend.”
The first date came and went between John and Colleen in fact, there were several dates they shared together.
There will be a part two to this story entitled, The Girl With The Golden Hair.
It won’t be the proverbial bed of roses as the relationship develops between John and Colleen.
Will it be heart wrenching? It’s hard to say, but if you think about your first love, I mean, true love you may be able to relate to the romance as it unfolds.
